How Private Label Workwear Manufacturing Works

If you’re a distributor, safety supply store, or growing business thinking about putting your own name on workwear instead of reselling someone else’s brand, the process probably feels like a black box. Here’s what private label workwear manufacturing actually involves, step by step.

What “Private Label” Actually Means

Private label manufacturing means a factory produces garments to your specification and applies your branding — your logo, labels, packaging and product naming — rather than selling you a pre-existing branded product to resell. The garment is built around your business, not adapted from someone else’s catalog.

This is different from simply adding your logo to an off-the-shelf item after the fact. True private label work builds branding into the manufacturing process itself — woven labels sewn in during construction, embroidery placement planned alongside the pattern, packaging designed around your product line.

The Three Ways to Start

You don’t need a finished design to start a private label project. Most projects begin one of three ways:

1. Start from a sample. Send a physical garment you already like — your current supplier’s product, a competitor’s item, or something close to what you want — and we manufacture to match or improve on it.

2. Start from a sketch or reference. A rough sketch, a photo, or a description of what you’re picturing is enough to start a conversation about materials, construction and fit.

3. Start from a tech pack. If you already have complete specifications — measurements, construction notes, bill of materials, artwork placement — we manufacture directly from it.

The Development Process

Once a starting point is confirmed, private label development generally follows this path:

  1. Brief — confirming the product, target buyer, and quantity expectations
  2. Design — locking in garment features and specification details
  3. Materials — selecting fabric, trims and colour
  4. Prototype — building the pattern and first sample
  5. Review — checking fit, function, and requesting changes
  6. Approval — sealing the approved sample as the production standard
  7. Production — manufacturing at full order quantity against the sealed sample

Every later production run is checked against that sealed sample, so consistency doesn’t drift between batches — this matters most for distributors reordering the same product over time.

Confidentiality

If you’re developing a product you don’t want shared with other buyers, this can be handled under NDA, with controlled access to your designs, tech packs and product concepts during development.

When Private Label Makes Sense

Private label manufacturing generally makes the most sense when:

  • You’re a distributor or safety supply business wanting a product line under your own name instead of reselling a national brand
  • You have a recurring or growing order volume, since private label branding is more cost-effective at scale than one-off custom orders
  • You want consistent branding, sizing and quality across every reorder, not just a single batch

For smaller or one-time orders, a standard product with added branding (rather than a full private label development project) is usually the more practical starting point — we can advise which approach fits your order size.

Getting Started

Private label workwear development starts in our Design Lab — pick whichever entry point fits what you already have (sample, sketch, or tech pack), and we’ll take it from there.

Frequently Asked Questions

What’s the difference between private label and white label workwear? Private label typically means the product is built specifically to your specification and branding from the ground up. White label usually refers to an existing product that multiple buyers can brand with their own logo. We primarily manufacture private label, built around your requirements.

Do I need a finished design to start a private label project? No. You can start from a physical sample, a sketch or reference image, or a complete tech pack — whichever you already have.

How long does private label development take? Timing depends on the product, materials and number of sample revisions needed. Share your product and quantity and we’ll confirm realistic timing for your specific project.

Is there a minimum order quantity for private label manufacturing? Minimums vary by product, fabric and branding requirements. Contact us with your product and target quantity and we’ll confirm what’s possible.
